Kombu and History Carried by the Kitamaebune
Once, the Kitamaebune trade ships connected Toyama with Hokkaido and other regions, creating vital maritime trade routes.
The kombu transported from Hokkaido by these ships gave rise to Toyama’s rich kombu-based food culture, which continues to thrive today.
However, the Kitamaebune carried more than just goods.
They transported the latest news, diverse cultures, and the spirit of the people.
Leading the exchange across the Sea of Japan, the Kitamaebune ships were truly "moving trading companies."

KOMBU HOUSE: A Hands-on Experience of Takaoka’s History and Culture
Kombu House is an immersive facility where you can experience the history and culture of Takaoka through kombu, brought by the Kitamaebune.
The entire facility revolves around the concept of "Kombu Wellness," inspired by the Japanese idea of "Yojo"—nurturing health and well-being by maintaining balance in body and mind.
